‘The most natural acting thus far’

Drashti Dhami talks to Sangeeta Yadav about her show Pardes Mein Hai Mera Dil which is going on air from tomorrow at 8pm on Star Plus

  • Your new show looks like a fairy tale…

It isn’t a fairy tale love though Naina’s way of finding her true love is a fantasy in today’s day and age. It’s unspoken love between each other. Without saying a word, you say everything by just looking into each other’s eyes. She is looking forward to find someone like that who will make her life complete. She is very patient about that and what’s of utmost important for her is her mother’s health.

  • How is Naina different from previous roles?

The character is very realistic and not a fantasy character of an ideal bahu, daughter or lover. She is the breadwinner of the family and a very strong and independent woman who works as a literature professor. She believes in waiting for the right partner and falling in love. I’m enjoying playing Naina and I’m getting deeper into it.

  • What was the biggest challenge?

Every scene that has been written is so logical that it requires us to be as natural as possible. During the first 20 days, I was a little lost as I didn’t know how to make it so natural and simple. I still feel that I am working towards it.

  • How was your experience shooting in Austria?

It was impeccable. We worked like family and the entire cast and crew used to sit together and eat. There was no single vanity. Instead, we used to get ready in our rooms. In 12 hours, we had to finish everything. We used to wake up at 4 am and when the day would get over, we would still feel fresh. It was extremely cold though but that had its own fun.

  • You met a German lady who is your big fan…

She had come to Mumbai when I was doing Ek Thha Raja, Ek Thhi Rani. Since I was shooting in Udaipur, I couldn’t meet her but when she got to know that I was in Austria for a month, she drove down from Munich. She doesn’t know English or Hindi but used to watch my show. She got her grandson along so that he could translate for her. She has a gown boutique and  said: “I wish you wouldn’t have married. I would’ve gifted you a wedding gown”. She was very kind and I feel good to meet a fan from outside my country.
